Poribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba), an organization of green activists, on Thursday urged the government to take proper initiatives immediately to provide proper healthcare facilities to low-income people of urban areas.
The green activists came up with the call while speaking at a seminar on “City environment and health protection of low income people” promoting World Health Day, to be observed on April 7 at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
Poba and the Bangladesh Resource Center for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK) jointly organized the seminar.
According to UNB, they said the sanitation system is a big problem in the slum areas and a good sanitation system should be created for slum-dwellers in cities.
Abu Naser, Chairman of Poba, said, "The government should ensure basic rights of people. We want to live in a clean environment. So the government has to take proper initiative for healthy environment for all, especially slum-dwellers of the city."
Barcik Co-coordinator Jahangir Alam said that awareness should be spread among people about health and environment and the government should come forward in order to meet the basic needs of the people.
Engineer Abdus Sobhan, General Secretary of Poba, Dr. Khaled Shawkat Ali, health affairs secretary of the organization, and Dr Lelin Chowdhury were, among others, present.
