Chief Whip of the National Parliament Nurul Islam Moni on Thursday said the Constitution will be amended and the July Charter will be implemented, taking into consideration the views of all stakeholders.
He made the remarks after submitting BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s nomination paper for the post of president election to Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission Building, Agargaon, on Thursday.
“A constitution is not changed for one day. It will be changed for many years. We will not rewrite the constitution. Even if we change a comma, that will be constitutional reform,” he said.
The chief whip said the BNP had invited everyone to participate in the amendment process and expressed hope that all would sit together to complete the task.
During the time, BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said the referendum had no connection with the presidential election.
He said the referendum’s outcome would be reflected in Parliament in phases, while the presidential election was a separate matter.
The chief whip said Mirza Fakhrul had been nominated for the post of president by the BNP-led alliance and expressed hope that he would be elected on August 20.
He said the beauty of democracy lies in competition and elections, adding that the BNP formed parliament through a neutral election after a 17-year movement.
BNP leaders, its Standing Committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, its Senior Joint Secretary General and Prime Minister's Political Adviser Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee were present.
