The ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Sunday collected two nomination forms for the election of the country’s 23rd president.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and Prime Minister’s Adviser Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed and BNP Vice Chairman and National Parliament Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni collected the forms from the Chief Election Commissioner’s office at the Election Commission Bhaban in Agargaon.
Earlier on Thursday, Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed announced the presidential election schedule.
Under the schedule, nomination papers will be submitted from 10am to 4pm on August 13, while scrutiny will be held on August 16. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until 4pm on August 18.
Voting will take place from 2pm to 5pm on August 20 in the National Parliament chamber.
The EC secretary said the voter list for the presidential election had already been finalised and that necessary administrative and other preparations were underway to ensure a smooth election.
Former President Md Sahabuddin resigned from office at around 4pm on July 24, citing “personal reasons.” He was the country’s 22nd president.
He submitted his resignation to the Speaker of the National Parliament. In his resignation letter, titled “Resignation from the Office of the President,” Sahabuddin said he was stepping down in accordance with Article 50(3) of the Constitution.
