The Election Commission (EC) has sought the list of Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Parliament Secretariat to prepare the electoral roll for the election of Bangladesh's 23rd President.
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the date and schedule for the presidential election will be determined only after the voter list is received.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters at the Election Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Monday.
"No date or schedule for the presidential election has been fixed yet," he said. "We have requested the Parliament Secretariat to provide the electoral roll. Once we receive the voter list, we will discuss the election date and schedule."
Former President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on July 24, citing personal reasons. He submitted his resignation to the Speaker of Parliament through an official letter written on the President's letterhead, invoking Article 50(3) of the Constitution. He served as Bangladesh's 22nd President.
On the issue of National Identity (NID) card corrections, the EC secretary said a committee has been formed to review the matter, but its recommendations have yet to be finalised.
"The discussions have been held within a broad framework, but no standard operating procedure (SOP) has been finalised to define the issues the committee will examine and ensure there are no inconsistencies. I will brief the media on the matter in detail later," he said.
Explaining the hierarchy of official documents, he said the National Identity Card is Bangladesh's primary identity document, while a passport is a travel document.
"We rely on birth registration certificates issued by the Registrar General of Birth and Death Registration, while passport authorities rely on information contained in the NID," he added.
