BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman on Sunday held separate courtesy meetings with the leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party (NCP), days after his party secured a single-party majority in the 13th national parliamentary election.
Tarique first visited the residence of Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman in the Bashundhara Residential Area. He arrived around 7pm after leaving his Gulshan residence at approximately 6:30pm. The meeting lasted for nearly an hour.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan were present on behalf of the BNP. Representing Jamaat were Assistant Secretary General and Central Publicity and Media Department Chief, Advocate Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair, and International Affairs Secretary Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher.
In a post on his verified Facebook page following the meeting, Shafiqur Rahman congratulated Tarique Rahman in advance as the “future prime minister of Bangladesh.”
“His visit marks a historic moment in our national politics,” he wrote. “Through dialogue and responsibility, I hope this will usher in a new chapter of political maturity and mutual respect.”
The Jamaat ameer said he envisions a Bangladesh free from fascism, founded on sovereignty, justice and fairness, and reaffirmed Jamaat’s commitment—alongside the 11-party alliance—to building a prosperous and stable state grounded in democratic values and constitutional governance.
According to Shafiqur Rahman, the meeting also discussed post-election violence and the safety of opposition activists and minority communities. He said Tarique assured him that effective measures would be taken to prevent such incidents.
While pledging cooperation with the elected government on issues of national interest, the Jamaat ameer said his party would remain firm in carrying out its constitutional role as an ideological opposition. “We will support pro-people initiatives, but will remain vocal wherever accountability is required,” he added.
In the election held last Thursday, the BNP won 209 of the 297 declared seats, securing a single-party majority. With three additional seats won by its allies, the BNP-led alliance now commands a total of 212 seats in parliament.
After the Jamaat meeting, Tarique Rahman paid a courtesy visit to the residence of NCP Convener Md Nahid Islam in Badda at around 8:30pm. Nahid Islam received him downstairs and later welcomed him inside the residence with flowers. NCP central leaders Sarjis Alam and Akhtar Hossain were also present.
Earlier, at around 8pm, Nahid Islam presented Tarique Rahman with flowers, a portrait of a water lily bud, and a letter written by Anas, a martyr of the mass uprising of 2024, as tokens of goodwill. He also congratulated the BNP chairperson on the party’s electoral victory.
During the meeting, Nahid urged Tarique to take effective measures to stop post-election attacks and violence against BNP leaders and activists across the country, citing incidents in Noakhali, Hatiya and Panchagarh. He also called for the execution of the verdict against Sheikh Hasina in the July–August genocide case and for the continuation of prosecutions related to killings committed in previous periods.
Nahid said that in the newly formed parliament, the National Citizen Party would act as a responsible and effective opposition to ensure government accountability, while keeping the door open for dialogue to resolve any political crisis.
Those present at the meeting included Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Nazrul Islam Khan from the BNP, as well as NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain and Chief Organizer (North) Sarjis Alam.
Tarique Rahman’s back-to-back meetings with the top leaders of Jamaat and the NCP following the BNP’s electoral victory are being viewed as politically significant in the current context.
