Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to visit the residences of Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizens' Party (NCP), on Monday evening.
This visit has been widely hailed as a significant step toward fostering a new era of positive politics in the country.
Sarjis Alam, the chief coordinator of NCP’s northern region, expressed deep appreciation for Tarique Rahman’s initiative, which he views as a break from the tradition of political vengeance.
In a Facebook post, Sarjis wrote: “As a new beginning for positive politics, today (February 15) evening, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman will visit Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and the convener of National Citizens’ Party (NCP), Nahid Islam. This initiative transcends the old culture of political revenge and seeks to nurture mutual respect and harmony among political parties and leaders. Such efforts are essential for the democratic progress of Bangladesh. We sincerely thank Tarique Rahman for this timely step.”
The gesture comes at a time when the political atmosphere in Bangladesh has been marked by increasing polarization. Tarique Rahman’s visit is being seen as an attempt to bridge divides and encourage constructive dialogue among key political figures.
It is worth noting that Sarjis Alam had contested the 13th National Parliamentary Election in the Panchagarh-1 constituency, where he was defeated by BNP candidate Nawshad Jamir.
This development reflects a potential shift in the political dynamics of Bangladesh as leaders from different factions seek to collaborate for the nation’s democratic advancement.
