The Election Commission (EC) on Friday announced unofficial results of 297 constituencies, showing a landslide victory for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which secured 209 parliamentary seats.
According to the EC, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami won 68 seats, while the National Citizen Party (NCP) secured six.
Besides, independent candidates won seven seats. Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis secured two seats, while Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), Gono Odhikar Parishad and Ganosamhati Andolon won one seat each. Another seat went to Khelafat Majlis.
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed disclosed the figures at a press briefing at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka.
With the majority mark set at 151 in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad, the BNP has secured an absolute majority and is poised to form the next government independently.
Of the 299 constituencies where voting was scheduled, results of 297 were announced. The unofficial results of Chittagong-2 and Chittagong-4 have been kept pending following court orders, while polling in Sherpur-3 was earlier cancelled due to the death of a Jamaat candidate.
The EC said the average voter turnout was 59.44% in 297 constituencies. A preliminary consolidated figure showed turnout at 60.26% in 299 constituencies, pending final reconciliation.
Voting was held from 7:30am to 4:30pm. The Chief Election Commissioner described the overall polling environment as “largely peaceful and orderly,” saying law enforcement agencies, along with judicial and executive magistrates, were deployed nationwide to ensure a free and fair atmosphere.
Regarding the referendum on the implementation of the July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Order 2025, the EC said 48,074,429 votes were cast. Of them, 4,80,74,429 voters (68.05%) voted in favour of the “Yes” option, while 2,25,65,627 voters (31.95%) voted for “No”.
The commission said gazette notifications for the pending constituencies would be published after legal issues are resolved. A comprehensive final report on the polls will be released upon completion of all procedural formalities.
