BNP wins five seats in Dinajpur, independent takes one

BNP candidates have unofficially won five of the six parliamentary seats in Dinajpur, while an independent candidate, a recently expelled BNP rebel, has won the remaining seat.

The results were announced by Dinajpur Deputy Commissioner and District Returning Officer Rafiqul Islam at the deputy commissioner’s conference room on Thursday night.

In Dinajpur-1 (Birganj and Kaharole upazilas), BNP’s Manjurul Islam, contesting under the paddy sheaf symbol, secured 179,314 votes from 129 centres. His nearest rival, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Matiur Rahman, with the scale symbol, received 117,481 votes.

In Dinajpur-2 (Birol and Bochaganj upazilas), BNP candidate Sadiq Riaz won 139,622 votes from 117 centres, defeating Jamaat-e-Islami’s Afzalul Anam, who received 144,887 votes.

In Dinajpur-3, BNP’s Syed Jahangir Alam, with the paddy sheaf symbol, secured 140,608 votes, narrowly beating Bangladesh Islami’s Mainul Alam, who received 136,239 votes.

In Dinajpur-4 (Khansama and Chirirbandar upazilas), BNP’s Akhtaruzzaman Mia won 166,717 votes, while his closest rival, Aftab Uddin Molla, with the scale symbol, received 129,056 votes.

In Dinajpur-5 (Parbatipur and Phulbari upazilas), independent candidate and BNP rebel AZM Rezwanul Haque, contesting with the lock symbol, secured 114,484 votes. His nearest rivals, Dr Abdul Ahad with the Shapla Koli (Water Lily Bud) symbol and BNP’s Barrister Kamruzzaman with the paddy sheaf symbol, received 110,195 and 98,544 votes respectively.

In Dinajpur-6 (Hakimpur, Ghoraghat, Birampur and Nawabganj upazilas), BNP candidate Professor Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, with the paddy sheaf symbol, won 205,118 votes, defeating Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Anwarul Islam, who secured 190,703 votes.
