BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been unofficially declared the winner in the Thakurgaon-1 (Sadar) constituency.
After results from all 185 polling centres were announced, he secured 2,36,308 votes. His nearest rival, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Delwar Hossain, contesting with the scales symbol, received 1,38,936 votes.
Following the announcement of the results, Mirza Fakhrul delivered a brief address on Thursday night at his residence in the Kalibari area of Thakurgaon to supporters, well-wishers and members of the public who had gathered to congratulate him on his victory.
He said, “We are ahead. Inshallah, we will win the majority of seats and form the government.”
He added, “We are leading in many constituencies. Results are still pending in some areas. If given the opportunity, we will strive to reflect the aspirations of the people.”
Meanwhile, in Thakurgaon-2, BNP candidate Dr Abdus Salam has been elected, while in Thakurgaon-3, the party’s candidate Zahidur Rahman has also secured victory.
