Jamaat calls for suspension of voting at several polling stations alleging irregularities

Leaders of the 11-party electoral alliance have called for voting to be suspended at several polling stations in the Comilla-8, Shariatpur-2 and Patuakhali-1 parliamentary constituencies.

They allege that voters in these centres were unable to cast their ballots freely and without fear.

Advocate Muazzem Hossain Helal, Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, made the remarks to journalists on Thursday afternoon after a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).

He stated that voting was disrupted at several polling stations in Comilla-8, Shariatpur-2 and Patuakhali-1 due to irregularities and intimidation. As a result, they have demanded that voting be suspended at those centres to allow for re-polling. He added that voting is still ongoing and incidents of irregularities are continuing at various centres. Under the circumstances, there is still an opportunity to take action to ensure a free and fair result. These matters have been formally raised with the Election Commission. As evidence of the alleged irregularities, more than one hundred video clips and relevant links have been submitted to the Commission.

The Jamaat leader further claimed that in one constituency in Comilla, their polling agents were forced out of the centres, and the relevant officials have been informed. In Narsingdi-4, he alleged that BNP activists forcibly stamped ballot papers. He also said that incidents of irregularities at various centres in Noakhali and Jhalakathi have been reported to the Election Commission.

Earlier in the afternoon, at approximately 3:15 pm, a delegation of the 11-party alliance arrived at the Commission to meet Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin.
