EC writes to president seeking meeting on schedule announcement

The Election Commission (EC) has written to the president seeking a meeting to discuss the announcement of the schedule for the 13th national parliamentary election and the referendum.

EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the development while speaking to reporters at a workshop organized by the commission at the Election Training Institute (ETI) in Agargaon around 2:15pm on Thursday.

He said the EC has proposed holding the meeting on December 10 or 11.

Referring to recent amendments to the Representation of the People Order (RPO), Akhtar Ahmed said the Advisory Council has approved changes regarding the counting method for expatriate postal ballots, which ballots will be excluded, and how they will be counted.

He also said the EC has given in-principle approval to seek further information regarding the registration applications of two political parties — Bangladesh Janata Dal and Aam Janata Dal. A notice on the matter will be published in newspapers on Friday.
