United Nations Resident Representative in Dhaka Gwyn Lewis on Monday said that Bangladesh’s Election Commission (EC) has been formed with transparency.
She made this remark after meeting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka.
Speaking to reporters, Lewis said: “Today we had an introductory meeting with the newly appointed chief election commissioner. We came to express our support for the current Election Commission. We discussed the types of technical assistance the UN can provide to ensure free and fair elections.”
She added: “It is encouraging that this Election Commission was formed transparently and will receive the support of the interim government to operate independently. We look forward to working closely with this commission.”
When asked about discussions regarding the timing of elections, Lewis said: “No discussions were held on the election timeline during today’s meeting. That decision will be taken politically by the interim government. Our discussions were solely on technical matters.”
