Search committee for new Election Commission to hold first meeting Sunday

The search committee responsible for recommending candidates for the chief election commissioner (CEC) and five election commissioners is set to hold its first meeting on Sunday afternoon.

Led by Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury of the Appellate Division, the committee will convene at the Supreme Court, according to a High Court source.

Following the meeting, the cabinet secretary is expected to brief reporters at the Secretariat, sources said.

The interim government established the six-member search committee on October 29 as a crucial step toward reshaping the country's electoral framework.

In addition to Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, the committee includes High Court Division Judge Justice AKM Asaduzzaman; Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Nurul Islam; Bangladesh Public Service Commission Chairman Mobasser Momen; CR Abrar, executive director of the Refugee and Migratory Movement Research Unit; and Prof Zeenatun Nesa Tahmida Begum, former Dhaka University teacher and ex-PSC chairman.

Under current law, the search committee has up to 15 working days to propose 10 names — two for each commission seat — to the president.

The president will then select the chief election commissioner and four election commissioners to form the new Election Commission.

The posts became vacant on September 5, when Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal and four election commissioners resigned, following a mass uprising that led to the fall of the Hasina-led government.
