Election Violence: Youth shot dead in Narayanganj

A young man was killed in a reported police firing after supporters of two candidates got involved in a clash after the announcement of by-election polls at Pirojpur union in Narayanganj's Sonargaon upazila on Saturday evening. 

The incident occurred at the Dudhghata area of the union around 7pm.

The deceased was identified as Hriday Bhuiyan, 25, son of Amin Hossain Bhuiyan of Dudhghata village in Pirojpur union. 

A man named Faruk, son of late Kamal Hossain of the area, also sustained bullet injuries in the clash. 

At least 20 others, including several policemen, were also injured in the clash.

Sonargaon police station Officer in Charge (OC) SM Kamruzzaman said: "After announcing the results in Pirojpur union, there was a clash between the supporters of the winner and the defeated candidates. A youth named Hridoy was killed in the incident."

Sonargaon police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Pankaj Sarkar said: “The two sides clashed when the results were announced after counting votes. Police fired rubber bullets to bring the situation under control. The situation is under control now."

According to police and local sources, Abdul Aziz Sarkar and Kaiser Ahmed Raju contested the election with the symbols “Rooster” and “Lock”. 

Aziz Sarkar got 929 votes, and Kaiser Ahmed Raju bagged 811 votes. However, the defeated candidate Kaiser Ahmed Raju and his supporters did not accept the results and asked to count the votes again. This led to a scuffle and a clash between the two sides. When the police obstructed them, the people on both sides attacked them suddenly. 

Several policemen were injured in the incident. 

At one stage, police opened fire to bring the situation under control. 

Two supporters of the “Lock” symbol, Hridoy and Faruk, were shot in the clash. 

Among the injured, Hridoy died on the way. 

Faruk was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
