Tangail- 2: Ballot box torched; 3 Ansar men injured

Miscreants vandalized a polling station and set fire to a ballot box in Tangail on Sunday afternoon. 

Three Ansar members were injured in the incident. They are Badsha Mia, Abdul Gani and Antaz Ali. 

Law enforcement agencies had to fire five rounds of bullets to restore law and order in the polling station. 

The incident took place in the polling station of the Kaheta Govt Primary School in Hemnagor upazila of Gopalpur at 3:30pm on Sunday.

Police official Nazmul Hassan said: “The miscreants stepped into room no 3 of the men’s booth of the polling station suddenly. They took out the ballot box and set it on fire. There were around 300 ballot papers in the box.”

He said that he had to fire five rounds of bullets to recover the ballot box.  

“Voting has been cancelled in this polling station,” he said, adding that they left the polling station with the other ballot boxes and electoral equipment after ensuring the safety of the booth. 

Assistant Returning Officer and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sayeda Yasmin Sultana said: “Voting in 77 centres in Tangail-2 constituency was completed peacefully. After the voting, ballot boxes were set on fire at the Kaheta Govt Primary School centre and Ansar members were beaten up. Later, the police fired 5 rounds of blank bullets to control the situation.”    

Gopalpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Imdadul Islam Taiyab said: “Five rounds of bullets were fired to control the incident. Three Ansar members were injured in this incident. Necessary action will be taken after the complaint.”
