At least 10 supporters of an independent candidate for Sirajganj-3 were injured in an alleged attack by supporters of the Awami League-backed candidate for the constituency on Friday.
The incident took place on Friday afternoon in the Kundail market of Tarash upazila.
Tarash police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Badiuzzaman said that while independent candidate Sakhawat Hossain was campaigning on Friday afternoon and reaching out to voters, supporters of Awami League candidate Dr Abdul Aziz MP, came up from behind and started throwing punches and slaps.
“Police managed to move Sakhawat to safety, before detaining an activist for 'boat' named Munzil Talukdar,” Badiuzzaman added.
Independent candidate (Eagle) Sakhawat Hossain said: "I was peacefully electioneering. At least 10 of my supporters including Ayub Ali and Hasan were injured in the attack by the Awami League-nominated candidate's supporters."
Tarash police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazrul Islam said that they visited the site after the incident.
He said that legal action would be taken if a case was filed in this incident.
