EC directs election officials to file cases against 2 Awami League candidates

The Election Commission (EC) has instructed election officials to file cases against two Awami League candidates contesting the upcoming 12th national parliamentary polls for breaching the electoral code of conduct.

Election Commission Joint Secretary Md Mahbubar Rahman Sarkar confirmed the decision on Sunday. 

The two candidates are Mostafizur Rahman from Chittagong-16 and Abdul Hai from Jhenaidah-1.

Besides, the commission decided to summon Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, MP from Barguna-1 constituency and also a candidate of the Awami League, to appear before it at its office in Agargaon. However, the date has not been fixed yet. 

Moreover, the electoral enquiry committee of the commission found the truth of a complaint against Awami League candidate and MP AKM Bahauddin Bahar of Comilla-6, according to sources at the EC. 

Joint Secretary Mahbubar said instructions have been given to the election officers concerned to file two cases against Md Abdul Hai of Jhenaidah-1 in two separate incidents.

On the other hand, instructions have been given to file a case against Awami League candidate Mostafizur Rahman of Chittagong-16 for assaulting a journalist with the private television Independent TV on November 30 and violating the electoral code of conduct.

In response to another question, he said: "I do not know the decision of the EC to cancel someone's candidature…As of Sunday afternoon, 208 show-cause notices have been issued against candidates, supporters and various individuals for violating the electoral code of conduct.”
