Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has raised questions about the BNP’s understanding of democracy, pointing out that they previously violated the constitution to illegally attain power.
She said: "Does BNP understand what democracy is? BNP arose from the pockets of a general who illegally violated the constitution, army laws, and grabbed power.”
She was speaking at a virtual election rally of five districts, including Pabna, from the Dhaka District Awami League office in Tejgaon on Thursday.
The prime minister said that BNP will never join the election as their 20-party alliance won a mere 30 seats in the 2008 elections while Awami League alone secured 233.
“Ziaur Rahman seized power illegally. Conspired to steal votes. He made himself the army chief and the head of state by holding an election while in power. They're all against legality,” she added.
Prime Minister said: “They burned people to death by setting fire to the railway and buses, as they did in 2013-14 and 2018. 582 schools, 70 government offices, 6 land offices, 3252 cars, 29 railways, and 9 launches were burnt in the name of preventing the January 5 elections.”
She, indicating to Tarique Rahman, said: "There was another bastard in 2001, he had Hawa Bhaban. Without extortion, traders would be unable to do business. He has committed all of the criminal acts. He has been involved in everything from money laundering to arms smuggling, bringing 10 trucks of arms, and corruption."
The Awami League president has again campaigned for votes for boat by underlining the development projects of the government. She said to the activists and party leaders: "You all need to be aware of this election. There will be voting. The people will cast their vote. They have a constitutional right."
She said that the people will exercise their right to vote without hesitation. Whoever they votes will emerges victorious. Democracy must be extended. Bangladesh's future will end if this doesn't happen.”
