The talks between India and the US about Bangladesh’s national polls during the 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue is their internal matter, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said.
The 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue, an annual event being organized by the US and India since 2018, was held in New Delhi on November 10.
"It is natural for various aspects of greater global, regional, and sub-regional security and geopolitical stability to come up in the talks," foreign ministry spokesperson Seheli Sabrin said, at a press conference on Thursday.
What the two countries want to discuss is completely their internal matter, she added.
She added that the conceptual beginning of the foreign and defence ministerial-level 2+2 dialogue between India and the US is primarily known as a platform to discuss issues of the overall bilateral interest between the countries.
During the dialogue between India and the United States, various issues related to political, economic, and security were discussed in detail, she added.
This year’s 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue drew massive media attention in Bangladesh due to the upcoming general elections.
The US announced the visa policy to ensure free and fair elections in Bangladesh. On the other hand, India maintained that the election would be held as scheduled, a position that goes in favour of the ruling Awami League, while the opposition BNP wants an interim government to oversee the elections.
The dialogue was represented by the Indian ministers for External Affairs and Defence, the Secretary of State, and the Secretary of Defence of the US.
There had been a lot of speculation about the dialogue, despite the fact that it was a bilateral meeting between India and the US. As expected, nothing on Bangladesh was mentioned in the joint statement after the meeting on Friday.
