EC secretary finds conditions favourable for election schedule announcement

Election Commission Secretary Md Jahangir Alam has said conditions are now favourable for the announcement of the schedule for the upcoming general election, stating that the polls will be held within 90 days before the expiration of the current parliament’s 5-year term in line with the constitution, and the commission is finalizing its preparations.

The Election Commission held a meeting with election commissioners from India, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Nepal, and nine representatives, including those from Election Monitoring Forum, at Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Sunday morning.

Four election commissioners, including Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal, attended the meeting.

The Election Commission secretary made his statement following the meeting.

Jahangir said: "There was an exchange of information about how the election system works in their countries and how our Election Commission works. They wanted to know about the election in Bangladesh through some questions. On behalf of the Election Commission of Bangladesh, the CEC and other commissioners answered their questions. In addition, the commission asked them to answer some of its questions about how the election system is in operation in their countries."

"We only discussed our procedures during the exchange. We are familiar with how elections are conducted in their countries. If there is a chance for improvement, the commission will consider it," he added.
