Traffic movement has been halted on the Gulshan and Banani areas centring the Dhaka-17 by-election on Monday.
Police checkpoints have been installed at the entrance to each road. All types of vehicles except authorized ones are being diverted.
The members of law and order forces have set up check-posts on every road at the entrance in Banani, Chairman Bari, Mohakhali, Bhashantek, and Gulshan areas of the capital.
The traffic personnel on duty are seeking to know the destination of each vehicle. Vehicles with valid cards and stickers are allowed to enter. However, motorcycles and CNG are not allowed to enter.
A traffic officer-in-charge of Banani area said: “We are working as per the instructions of the Election Commission in order to ensure security around the elections.”
Gulshan, Banani and Mohakhali areas have been closed and this has affected the main road. Long traffic jams were seen on entries and exits to the capital.
Besides, the Dhaka Chaka public transport service running from Banani to Gulshan is closed. Public transport from Mirpur 10 to Sainik Club is closed. Three-wheeled rickshaws are plying on various roads.
