Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Elias Sharif has promised to take strict action if any candidate's agents are thrown out of polling centres during the Sylhet City Corporation election.
He was speaking to reporters after visiting the polling station at Blue Bird School and College around 10am on Wednesday.
He said: "Each and every polling station in Sylhet is holding festive polls with full presence of voters. However, we are prepared to prevent any disturbances. Also, if the Jatiya Party mayoral candidate feels that his agents are being kicked out or there is a problem at any polling station, just let us know… we will take immediate action."
"We have not received any reports of disorder during voting. The polling process is progressing smoothly at all centres," the SMP chief added.
The city is holding its fifth election. The total number of voters in this city corporation is 487,753, with 254,360 being male and 233,387 being female.
There are seven candidates competing for the position of mayor, 273 candidates for councillor posts in general wards and 86 candidates in reserved wards.
The mayoral candidates are the Awami League's Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, the Jatiya Party's Nazrul Islam Babul and Zaker Party's Zahirul Alam, while Abdul Hanif Kutu, Salah Uddin Rimon, Shah Jahan Mia and Mostak Ahmed Rouf Mostafa are running as independent candidates.
The Islami Andolan's Hafiz Maulana Mahmudul Hasan has boycotted the election.
