The Election Commission has completed all preparations for Sylhet City Corporation election which is going to be held on Wednesday.
Voting equipment including Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were sent from the Abul Mal Abdul Muhit Sports Complex at Mendibagh in the city to the centre through tight security on Tuesday afternoon.
Voting in 190 centers will continue from 8am till 4pm on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, returning officer Faisal Kader said that the entire city corporation area has been covered with a four-tier security before the polls.
He said: "All preparations have been completed to make the election fair and beautiful. However, due to the rain, there is concern about the presence of voters in Sylhet's polling stations.”
He also said that all the centres have installed CC cameras.
Besides, 10 platoon BGB members will work in security. There will be RAB members and a police striking force. Ansar members will be accompanied by police in each centre.
Apart from this, 42 executive magistrates for 42 wards and 14 judicial magistrates are on the ground for immediate trial of any election-related offence.
The election is going to be held for the fifth time in this city in 42 wards with an area of 79.50 square kilometres.
The mayoral candidates are- Awami League's Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, Jatiya Party's Nazrul Islam Babul, Zaker Party's Zahirul Alam while Abdul Hanif Kutu, Salah Uddin Rimon, and Shah Jahan Mia are the independent candidates.
Islami Andolan's Hafiz Maulana Mahmudul Hasan has boycotted the election.
Among the mayoral candidates of Sylhet, Awami League candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury and Jatiya Party' Nazrul Islam Babul may be in a fierce competition, voters said.
There will be two CC cameras outside of each polling station. There are cameras in 1,367 polling booths. In total there are 1,747 CC cameras. These will be monitored from the EC head office in Dhaka.
This time the total number of voters is 487,753. . Among them 254,360 are male voters and 233,387 female voters.
Six candidates are contesting for the post of mayor, 273 for the post of councillor in the general ward and 86 in the reserved ward.
