The Election Commission (EC) on Monday said that it will install closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) for 132 centres it identified as risky ahead of Sylhet city polls due Wednesday.
It will also deploy additional law- enforcers to ensure security at the centres.
Returning Officer Foysol Kader confirmed the matter to the media, saying 10 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will be deployed in the polls area from Tuesday.
Moreover, 14 judicial and 42 executive magistrates will be on the ground to ensure security in the area for five days before and after the election.
The returning officer said they have taken a four-tier security measure ahead of the polls. Six police officers and constables will be on duty at the risky centres while five will be deployed at each general centre. Additionally, 12 Ansar members will be deployed at each centre.
On the other hand, 22 mobile teams of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and 14 special striking forces will remain on alert.
He said that CCTV cameras are being installed at these risky centres which will allow EC officials in Dhaka to monitor the voting process.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Sudip Das said they are ready to tackle any untoward situation.
Earlier on Sunday, the EC marked 132 out of 190 centres as risky (important) in the city.
According to the list prepared by Sylhet Metropolitan Police, all the polling stations in wards 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 15, 22, 24, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 31, 36, 38, 39 and 42 (total 18) have been marked as risky. In addition, one or more centres in some wards have been identified as risky. However, the only exception is the newly formed Ward No 41. All the centres there are risk-free or general.
According to the Office of the Returning Officer, there are a total of 4,86,605 voters in the city. Eight candidates are contesting for the mayor's post, 273 for the ward councillor post, and 87 for the reserved ward councillor post.
Opposition BNP, however, has boycotted the election, and expelled 43 leaders for defying its decision. The BNP has also formed committees to ensure that no party activist campaigns for any candidate and do not cast vote.
There are a total of 1,364 polling booths in 190 polling centres.
Ruling party candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury is contesting the mayoral race with boat symbol, Jatiya Party's Nazrul Islam Babul with plough, Islami Andolan's Hafiz Maulana Mahmudul Hasan with hand fan, and Zaker Party's Zahirul Alam with rose.
Independent candidates Abdul Hanif Kutu are contesting the polls with horse, Salah Uddin Rimon with cricket bat, and Shah Jahan Mia with bus symbol.
