EC Rasheda wants RCC polls to be ideal

Election Commissioner Rasheda Sultana on Friday said that Election Commission wants to present Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) polls as an ideal election.

“There is no alternative to holding free and fair elections. We want to highlight the Rajshahi City Corporation election as an ideal one,” she said while addressing a view exchange meeting with the presiding officers of the RCC election as a chief guest.

“You will take the voters to the centre following the rules. Do not influence voters in any unethical way. Let them give their votes,” she told the presiding officers.

She also urged the presiding officers not to be impatient with the voters and tough situation during the polls.

The election commissioner said that candidature for the election of RCC will be cancelled if anyone violates the code of conduct.

"Election Commission will take stern action against the violators of the election code of conducts," she warned.

She urged the voters to go to the polling centre in due time to exercise their rights of franchise.

While responding to reporters, Rasheda Sultana said that the boycott of the election of the mayoral candidate of the Islamic Andolan Bangladesh will not have any effect.

Three candidates, including RCC former Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, are now in the election race for the mayoral post, while 111 for councilors in 30 wards.

There are 3,51,982 voters to exercise their right of franchise in EVMs in 155 polling centres in 30 wards from 8am to 4pm scheduled to be held on June 21.
