CEC urges RCC election candidates to uphold law and order

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has called upon the candidates contesting the upcoming Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) election to prioritize the maintenance of law and order.

He made the call during a meeting held at Rajshahi Shilpakala Academy on Wednesday.

The CEC emphasized that law enforcement agencies would operate impartially under the guidance of the Election Commission.

"We want to make it clear that we will take a firm stance on matters concerning the electoral code of conduct. In case of any substantial violations, we will promptly cancel the candidacy, provided there is sufficient evidence.

"Our objective is to ensure a free and fair election that offers equal opportunities to all candidates."

Addressing concerns raised by some individuals regarding the reliability of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), Kazi Habibul Awal stated: "We have successfully conducted numerous elections using EVMs. Therefore, we do not wish to entertain any more doubts about this method. If anyone lacks confidence in it, they may seek legal recourse."

“We have conducted several elections using EVMs, and we have not observed any irregularities or tampering. If we had seen ghosts in EVMs, we would have taken action. This is because we firmly believe in honesty, and the Election Commission operates as an impartial constitutional institution separate from the government,” he added.

The CEC also assured that CCTV cameras would be installed at the polling centres. Additionally, he emphasized the Election Commission's monitoring of electronic, print and online media. He highlighted the significance of media coverage in today's world and emphasized that journalists would have access to all areas except voting booths.

"Through the media, we can assess the transparency and efficiency of the election process," he stated.

He added that the Election Commission would remain vigilant against any fraudulent activities or attempts to disrupt the election proceedings, ensuring a fair and smooth electoral process.
