4 candidates submit nomination papers for Gazipur city polls

Four candidates submitted their nomination papers to the returning officer on Wednesday for the mayoral race in the Gazipur City Corporation polls, scheduled for May 25.

They are Jatiya Party's MM Niaz Uddin, a former secretary, local Awami League leader and independent candidate Abdullah-Al Mamun Mondal, Gonotantri Party's Atiqul Islam, and Harunur Rashid. Meanwhile, 86 candidates submitted nomination papers for the posts of councillors, Returning Officer Faridul Islam said.

Thursday is the last date for submitting nomination papers. Ruling Awami League-nominated Azmat Ullah Khan did not submit his nomination paper on Wednesday.

After receiving the nomination papers, the election official advised all candidates to follow the electoral codes of conduct.

Niaz Uddin, president of the Gazipur metropolitan unit Jatiya Party, submitted his nomination paper to the returning officer at 12:30pm. He hoped that the Election Commission will ensure a level-playing field for all the candidates and hold a free and fair election.

Independent candidate Mamun is a current councillor from Ward Number 35. He said the people of Gazipur will vote for him in the May 25 polls.

Assistant Returning Officer and District Election Officer AHM Kamrul Hasan said votes will be cast through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in 57 general and 19 reserved wards. There will be 478 presiding officers throughout the city corporation area and another 3,491 assistant presiding officers on duty.

Nomination papers will be scrutinized on April 30 while May 8 has been kept as the deadline for withdrawing candidature. Symbols will be allocated to the candidates the next day.
