Awami League yet to give EC info it sought, BNP wants more time

The ruling party Awami League did not give information to the Election Commission about its compliance with the registration conditions, while the opposition party BNP has asked for more time.

Previously, the Election Commission had written to the registered political parties seeking information on compliance with registration conditions, and out of the 39 registered parties, 23 parties provided the information on time, reports Bangla Tribune.

Besides, three parties, including BNP, have asked the Election Commission for additional time.

The Election Commission did not receive any response from the remaining 13 parties, including Awami League, till Thursday, said Additional Secretary at the commission Ashok Kumar Debnath.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal announced Election Commission's work plan in September for the upcoming national polls.

The commission sent letters to the registered political parties, asking whether they were properly complying with the conditions of registration on October 13.

The parties were asked to provide their answers within 30 working days or Thursday (November 24).

According to Election Commission sources, Jatiya Party, National People's Party, Bangladesh Tarikat Federation, Islami Oikya Jote, Khelafat Majlish, and others gave information to Election Commission on time.

BNP has requested time till December 31 to provide the information, while Bangladesh Congress and Bangladesh Muslim League have applied for another three months time.

The Election Commission has been providing registration to political parties since 2008.

A party cannot participate in an election unless it is registered with the Election Commission.

The conditions prescribed by law must be met in order to obtain this registration. Once the registration is obtained, certain conditions must be met.

The Election Commission can cancel a party's registration if the parties do not comply with the laws.
