Election Commissioner Rashida Sultana has said the commission will investigate whether groups or people associated with the Jamaat-e-Islami, whose registration was cancelled following a court verdict, have applied to register under different names.
The registration of the Jamaat-e-Islami was cancelled, so they cannot even join any polls, she said at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka on Thursday.
“If there is any evidence regarding Jamaat-related people in a new party, we will sit in the commission and take a decision according to the law,” she added.
Earlier, Projonmo '71, an organization of children of martyrs of the Liberation War, demanded not to give registration to anti-Liberation War political parties, including Bangladesh Development Party (BDP).
They submitted a memorandum containing this demand to Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal on Thursday.
In this regard, she said: “We know that there are certain conditions in the law. A party only gets registration if it fulfils these conditions. It is not appropriate to say yet whether Jamaat is coming as a different party.”
She said BDP has submitted the application. People are saying that this party includes members of Jamaat. However, it cannot be determined without proof.
