Candidates who support the ruling Awami League bagged most of the general councillor posts in the Narayanganj City Corporation polls yesterday.
BNP supporting candidates were elected to the second highest number of posts, while Jatiya Party (JaPa), Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) and an independent candidate took the remainder.
A total of 148 candidates contested 27 councillor posts, while 34 female candidates contested nine reserved seats.
Awami League supporting candidates were elected to 15 out of the 27 general councillor posts, while BNP supporting candidates were elected to nine of them. JaPa and JSD supporting candidates took one seat each, and the last seat was taken by an independent candidate.
According to the unofficial result, 14 of the councilors were reelected in the polls. Among them, five are Awami League supporters, one joined AL from the BNP recently, five are BNP supporters, one independent, one JSD and one JaPa.
After a heated election campaign over 18 days, voting in the Narayanganj elections started at 192 polling centres in 27 wards of the city at 8am yesterday and continued till 4pm without any break.
Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Selina Hayat Ivy secured re-election to become the NCC mayor for the third time in a row, earning 69,000 more votes than nearest competitor and ousted BNP leader Taimur Alam Khandaker.
