Awami League candidate Mahbubur Rahman Chowdhury has been elected unofficially for the post of mayor of Cox's Bazar municipality.
He bagged 28,062 votes in the election.
The closest competitor, Awami League's rebel candidate with the coconut tree symbol, Masedul Haque Rashed, got 24,699 votes.
Returning Officer and District Election Officer SM Shahadat Hossain announced the election results at 8:30pm on Monday.
Dhaka TribuneEarlier, the voting started simultaneously from 8am in 43 centers of 12 wards of Cox's Bazar Municipality and ended at 4 pm in a fair and peaceful atmosphere except for some isolated incidents.
The total number of voters in the 12 wards of the municipality was 94, 811 people.
Among them, 59,306 voters cast their votes.
Meanwhile, the voter turnout in the election was 62.55%. Besides, 227 votes were cancelled.
