The Election Commission has cancelled the by-election to Gaibandha-5 constituency over allegations of irregularities.
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal made the announcement on Wednesday afternoon, a couple of hours after saying the election had gone out of control.
The commission could stop an election if it felt that votes were not being cast properly, he said.
Awal was earlier speaking to reporters while monitoring the polls through CCTV camera feeds at Nirbachan Bhaban.
Stating that the commission wanted to see fair polls, he said at the time that voting at some centres would not have reflected the public opinion.
Earlier in the day, all candidates except Awami League-nominated Mahmud Hasan boycotted the polls raising allegations of irregularities.
Jatiya Party candidate AHM Golam Shahid, Bikalpa Dhara's Jahangir Alam, and independent candidates Nahiduzzaman Apel and Syed Mahbubur Rahman announced their decision at a press conference at Bagervita Govt Primary School in Saghata upazila of Gaibandha at around 11:30am.
Voting began at 88 centres in Saghata upazila and 57 in Fulchhari upazila with electronic voting machines (EVMs) at 8am on Wednesday.
Fazle Rabbi Miah, deputy speaker of parliament and the lawmaker then representing Gaibandha-5 constituency, passed away on July 22. Two days later, the Parliament Secretariat declared the seat vacant.
