The ruling Awami League performed poorly in the seventh phase of the Union Parishad polls, with double the number of independent candidates being elected.
Election Commission data show that voters elected 86 independent candidates for chairman posts while only 40 Awami League candidates won the race.
The data also placed Jatiya Party third in the race as three of its candidates emerged victorious.
Voting in 138 unions in the seventh and final phase of the Union Parishad polls on Monday was marred by a few incidents of violence.
In Chittagong, two persons, including a teenage boy, were killed during a clash between supporters of chairman candidates.
Election officials suspended voting in four unions during the final phase of the polls.
On December 29 last year, the EC announced the schedule for the election. The deadline for submission of nomination papers expired on January 12.
The seventh phase of the UP polls was held in Comilla, Rangamati, Rangpur, Chittagong, Mymensingh, Kishoreganj, Noakhali, Sunamganj, Patuakhali, Khagrachhari, Bandarban, Thakurgaon, Nilphamari, Joypurhat, Sirajganj, Chuadanga, Jhenaidah, Pirojpur, Sylhet and Cox’s Bazar districts.
