The chairmen candidates nominated by Awami League in six out of nine upazila parishads are on the way to getting elected without contesting the fifth Upazila Parishad polls.
In three upazilas will however have to compete against Awami League-led Grand Alliance and rebel candidates in the polls.
The uncontested candidates are Saidur Rahman Rintu from Barisal Sadar upazila, Golam Faruk from Banaripara upazila, Abdur Rais Serniabad from Agailjhara upazila, Syeda Manirunnahar Marry from Gournadi, Shamsul Alam Chunnu from Bakerganj, and Tarikul Hasan Khan Mithu for Muladi upazila parishad of the district.
Iqbal Akhter, additional deputy commissioner and returning officer,, said: “A letter recommending the uncontested candidates as elected has been sent to the Election Commission on Friday.”
Office of the returning officer said symbols for candidates of chairman posts of the three upazilas Wazirpur, Babuganj and Hizla, one male and one female vice chairman post in Barisal Sadar, Banaripara, Muladi, Hizla, Wazirpur, Babuganj, and Bakerganj upazilas, were allocated on Friday.
Earlier, Awami League rebel Anwar Husain from Sadar, and Mizanur Rahman of Jatiya Party from Banaripara, withdrew their candidacies.
The nomination papers of upazila vice president and rebel Awami League candidate from Muladi, Yusuf Ali, were disqualified after scrutiny.
Apart from that, no others submitted their nomination forms in Agailjhara, Gournadi, and Bakerganj upazilas, against Awami League nominated chairman candidates.
The polls for the chairman post in Wazirpur, Babugani, and Hizla upazilas, will be held on March 24.
In Wazirpur, Awami League candidate, Majid Shikdar Bachchu, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) backed independent, Abul Kalam Azad, and Awami League rebel, Hafizur Rahman Iqbal, will run for office.
In Babuganj upazila, the contestants are Kazi Emdadul Huq from Awami League, Workers Party nominated candidate Mozammel Huq Firoj, Bikalpa Dhara candidate Enamul Huq Razu, and Awami League rebel candidate, Mostak Ahmed Ripon.
The contesting candidates from Hizla upazila are Sultan Mahmud from Awami League, rebel candidate Belayet Hossain Dhali, and independent candidate Kazi Zakir Hossain.
Male vice chairman candidates Farhad Hossain from Gournadi, Rafikul Islam Talukdar from Agailjhara, and female vice chairman candidates, Zinia Afroj Helen for Gournadi, Molina Rani Roy for Agailjhara, Farzana Binte Wahab from Babuganj, and Syeda Tasmima Hossain from Banaripara, also remain uncontested.
