AL reveals names of 122 candidates for 4th phase UP polls

The ruling Awami League has announced the names of chairman candidates for the 4th phase of upazila parishad elections in 122 upazilas, scheduled to be held on March 31.

The names of the candidates were finalized at a nomination board meeting held at Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina's residence—the Ganobhaban—on Friday.

Sheikh Hasina, also President of the Awami League Local Government Nomination Board, chaired the meeting, said an Awami League press release.

The Election Commission, on February 20, announced the fourth phase election schedule for 122 upazila parishads of 16 districts, set for March 31.

According to the election schedule, the deadline to submit nomination papers is March 4, while the date to scrutinize nomination papers is March 6, and the deadline by which to withdraw  candidacies is March 13.

The 122 upazilas include: seven upazilas in Patuakhali district, six in Bhola, five in Barguna, seven in Pirojpur, eight in Jessore, nine in Khulna, nine in Bagerhat, 12 in Mymensingh, six in Munshiganj, three in Narayanganj, five in Dhaka, 12 in Tangail, 13 in Comilla, seven in Noakhali, seven in Brahmanbaria, and six in Feni district.

Previously, the Election Commission announced the election schedules for the first three phases.

As per the schedules, 87 upazilas will go to the polls on March 10 in the first phase; 129 upazilas on March 18, in the second phase; and 127 upazilas on March 24, in the third phase.
