The Awami League-nominated mayoral candidate for the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) by-polls, Atiqul Islam, has urged the voters to treat themselves to tea and khichuri, the traditional meal favoured by Bengalis in rainy weather, and then vote in the election.
Atiqul stated this after casting his ballot at a polling centre in Nawab Habibullah Model School & College around 9:10am on Thursday. He was accompanied by his wife and daughter.
Speaking with the reporters after voting, the Awami League candidate said: “This is a rainy day, and a holiday. Treat yourselves to hot tea and khichuri, and then come to vote.
“Voting is your [voters] democratic right, and you must exercise this right.”
Voting in DNCC mayoral by-election and in 36 wards of Dhaka north and south city corporations is underway.
The casting of ballots started at 8am of Thursday morning, and will continue uninterrupted till 4pm.
