At least 18 people have been killed in spates of violence across the country as of Sunday afternoon during voting in the 11th general election.
In Chittagong, two people were killed in Patiya and Banskhali upazilas.
A youth named Abu Sadek was killed in a clash between supporters of Awami League and BNP candidates in Patiya upazila.
In Banskhali, a man identified as Ahmed Kabir was killed in violence between the supporters of Awami League and BNP candidates in Boroitoli area.
In Cox’s Bazar, a Jubo League activist was killed in a clash between Awami League and BNP activists.
The victim, Abdullah al Faruq, was fatally injured in a scuffle that took place at Matborpara Government Primary School polling centre in Razakhali area of Pekua upazila around 10:30am.
In Rangamati, a Jubo League leader died in a clash between Awami League and BNP activists at Kawkhali upazila.
In Noakhali, Ansar member Md Nurunnabi was killed in a clash between Awami League and BNP-Jamaat activists at Tularam Government Primary School polling centre under Begumganj upazila, said Noakhali Superintendent of Police Ilias Sharif.
In Narsingdi, an Awami League polling agent, Md Milon Miya, 45, was killed in violence at Kundarpara polling centre in Shibpur upazila, said Shibpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Kalam Azad.
In Brahmanbaria, Awami League activist Israil Mia, 18, was killed in violence at the Rajghar Government Primary School polling centre under Sadar upazila.
In Rajshahi, two people, including an Awami League leader, were killed in election violence.
A man named Meraj Ali died during a clash between supporters of Awami League and BNP candidates at the Pakuria Government Primary School polling centre in Mohanpur upazila, said district Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdur Razzak.
An Awami League leader was killed in a clash between supporters of the ruling party and BNP over occupying a polling centre at Mohammadpur High School in the district’s Tanore upazila.
The deceased was identified as Modasser Ali, 40, said district Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdur Razzak.
Both Awami League and BNP, however, claimed that the victim was one of their own.
In Gazipur, Chhatra League leader, Liakat Hossain, 44, was killed by unidentified assailants near the local deputy commissioner’s office at Harinal, said Metropolitan Sadar police station OC Samir Sutradhar.
A leader of Chhatra Dal, the student wing of BNP, was shot dead outside a polling centre in Sylhet’s Balaganj. Fahim Ahmed Sohel, Balaganj Chhatra Dal general secretary, was shot outside Azizpur Government Primary School around 4pm.
An Awami League activist was killed in election violence in Bogra. The victim, Azizul Islam, 30, was attacked at Kahaloo upazila in Bogra 4 constituency (Kahaloo-Nandigram).
Kahaloo police station OC Shawkat Kabir and Paikar Union Chairman Mithu Chowdhury told the Dhaka Tribune that BNP activists were responsible for the attack, which left Azizul dead and a UP member, Nazmul Huda Duel, injured.
Tojammel Hossain, 60, a voter from Khalaighat Ward No 2 under Lalmonirhat 3 constituency, was stabbed to death outside the Paglaghat Government Primary School polling centre when he went there to cast his vote around 3:30pm.
Awami League supporter Ratan Fakir stabbed his uncle Hussain Ali, also an Awami League supporter, at Samskholsi village in Naldanga upazila of Natore. Ratan and Hussain got into an argument after Ratan's wife cast her vote for BNP.
In Tangail, the dead body of Haji Abdul Aziz, 65, president of BNP's Nagda Shimla unit in Gopalpur, who had been missing since Saturday, was recovered from the area on Sunday.
Two persons were killed, one of them shot by police, in Comilla during Sunday’s voting.
Bachchu Mia, 45, a resident of Sondail village in Nangalkot upazila, was killed in a clash between the supporters of Awami League and BNP in the morning outside a polling centre at Murgaon, said Nangalkot OC Md Ashraf. Locals said Bachchu was a BNP supporter. He died at Comilla Medical College Hospital.
Muzibur Rahman, 35, of Muradnagar village under Chandina upazila, was shot dead by police at Pachhim Baleshwar Primary School while allegedly stealing ballot papers.
Shamsur Rahman Molla, 75, a BNP polling agent, was beaten to death at Abhaynagar upazila in Jessore.
