BNP's Moulvibazar 3 constituency candidate M Naser Rahman came under attack in Moulvibazar municipality on Friday night.
While briefing the media at his residence, after the incident, Naser Rahman alleged that Awami League activists set his party's electoral office alight in the Sadar upazila.
He also accused ruling party supporters of attacking his vehicle.
Naser alleged that he had gone to the municipality mayor's office on Friday night after being tipped off that about 50,000 ballot papers had been brought there to stuff ballot boxes.
"Jubo League and Chhatra League activists surrounded my vehicle, claiming I had black money with me, and vandalized the vehicle," Naser said.
"They also attacked and damaged the vehicles of former municipal mayor Fazlul Karim and former lawmaker Begum Khaleda Rabbani."
He said he had requested police assistance.
"The ruling party men removed the sacks filled with ballot boxes, on the mayor's orders, as police took their time to reach the site," Naser claimed.
However, Municipality Mayor Md Fazlur Rahman rejected the allegation, saying the ballot papers are with the presiding officer.
Naser said he tried to contact the returning officer but the latter did not receive the calls—prompting him contact the army—but nobody showed up.
Minutes later, he tried to get into his car and leave the site. Soon after, the ruling party men led a procession, in the presence of the police, he alleged.
"They attacked the BNP office near Sylhet Road and set it on fire after vandalizing it," Naser claimed.
He said police arrested a number of his supporters and were threatening BNP activists.
"The ruling party is desperately trying to stop me from winning," the BNP candidate alleged.
Mayor Fazlur rejected accusations of vandalism and arson. "It is a plot by the BNP to discredit the ruling party," he added.
