Mahbub Talukder to law enforcement: Uphold the sanctity of your uniform

Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder has asked members of all law enforcement agencies to uphold the respect and sanctity of their uniforms.

"You [law enforcement], are the most important allies in ensuring a fair election," he said. "It is your duty and responsibility to treat everyone equally, and steer clear of favouritism."

In a press briefing held at the Election Commission on Wednesday, Mahbub expressed his worries about the transparency of the December 30 polls and the escalating violence during the countdown to the election.

Mahbub urged law enforcement not to let their enthusiasm fuel undesirable actions.

He said an election cannot only be participatory; it must also be: fair, unbiased, lawful, and accepted by all parties.

"If we cannot hold a proper election, then we will never be able to hold our heads high in the world," he said. "We do not want to be tainted by having held a questionable election. Whoever wins, the nation must never lose."

Elections and terrorism cannot go hand in hand, he said.

"If a peaceful election cannot be held in favourable conditions, 47 years after the independence of the country, then the liberation war martyrs sacrificed their lives in vain," the election commissioner added.

Addressing the returning officers and all election-affiliated officers, Mahbub asked them to follow the electoral codes of conduct while carrying out their duties. "The nation will not bear the burden of a corrupt election. Undertake your duties courageously and do not be influenced by any external factors."

The election commissioner requested all voters to come to the polling centres, without fear.

"Do not be cowed or influenced by any parties," he said. "Cast your votes for your favourite candidates. Remember, one of your votes will help secure democracy and ensure a safe future for the next generation."
