Pre-poll violence: Offices vandalized, over 33 injured across country

The clashes occurred in Jhenaidah, Pabna, Jhalokathi, Comilla, Rajshahi and Chittagong

Attacks on election campaigns and political offices continued across the country, leaving more than 33 injured on Sunday and Saturday night on the 13th day of campaigning for the 11th general election, slated for December 30.

In Pabna, an election office came under attack in Bhangura upazila of Pabna district on Saturday night.

At least three people were injured in the attack.

Saidul Islam, organizing secretary of Bhangura Upazila Awami League, said miscreants riding on motorcycles hurled four cocktails at their office near Hazi Jamal Uddin Degree College around 9pm, while the election meeting was going on.

After a while, a group of 20-25 masked men wielding sticks attacked the office, beat up leaders and activists, leaving municipal Awami League Acting President Omar Faruque Rana, activist Sohel Hossain, and many others injured, he claimed.

Saidul Islam blamed local BNP-Jamaat men for the attack.

Denying the allegation, upazila BNP Organizing Secretary Zafar Iqbal Hirok, claimed the attack was staged by the Awami League. 

"They themselves carried out the attack, and are now blaming the BNP," he added.

Bhangura Police station Officer -in-Charge, Masud Rana, said police rushed to the spot after being informed and brought the situation under control.

In Comilla, at least five Awami League activists were injured as unidentified criminals hurled two crude bombs on an election campaign rally in Comilla’s Chandina upazila on Saturday night.  

The bombs were hurled targeting the rally of Ali Ashraf, Awami League candidate from Comilla 7 constituency, at Madhaiya around 7:30pm.

The injured are Ibrahim, 18, Ozayer, 22, Kader, 35, Ruhul Amin, 40, and Moslem, 60, of Madhaiya union in the upazila.

A group of 10-15 miscreants on three microbuses reached the spot and threw two crude bombs, leaving five Awami League men injured, said Abdul Halim, convener of the Chandina upazila unit of Tanti League.

The attackers were chanting “Sheaf of paddy” slogans and fled the scene, he claimed.

Abu Faisal Mia, officer-in-charge of Chandina police station, said they collected evidence of bomb explosions and recovered nine unexploded bombs from the spot. 

In a press briefing, Muntakim Ashraf Titu, Awami League joint secretary of Comilla north district unit, blamed supporters of LDP candidate Redwan Ahmed for the attack.

In Jhenaidah, miscreants burned down two Awami League election campaign offices in Jhenaidah.

The incident occurred in Kashtabhanga union of Kaliganj upazila, early on Sunday.

Kaliganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC Investigation), Atiqur Rahman, confirmed the matter. 

According to police and locals, the miscreants set the office- situated in Aamtala and Jaamtala areas of the union- on fire which damaged the colourful decorations and election posters in the vicinity of the office. 

Kaliganj Upazila Parishad’s former vice-chairman, Dr Rashed Shamser, claimed: “About 20 to 25 BNP-Jamaat activists set the offices on fire around 3am, which damaged the election posters and decorations in the office.”

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Kaliganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC Investigation) Atiqur Rahman said the police visited the spot.

In Jhalokathi, at least five Chhatra League activists were injured in an election campaign as two groups of Great Alliance candidate Bazlul Haque Haroon locked in a clash in the Boroya area of Rajapur upazila in the district on Sunday evening.

SI Siddiqur Rahman of Rajapur police station said that on being informed, the police went to the spot and brought the situation under control.

At least five Chhatra League activists were injured and 25 chairs vandalized during the clash, he said.

In Chittagong, BNP candidate for Chittagong 2 constituency, Colonel (retd) Azim Ullah Bahar, and 19 of his supporters were injured as Awami League men allegedly attacked a procession in favour of 'Sheaf of Paddy' in Fatikchhari upazila on Sunday, reports UNB.

Mohammad Ibrahim, personal assistant of the BNP contestant, said the followers of AL leader Taiyab swooped on Bahar and his activists around 1 pm when they brought out a procession at Muhammad Takirhat Bazar.

The attack left at least 20 BNP men injured, including Bahar and former judge Faisal Mahmud Fayezi,  he said.

Ibrahim also claimed the attackers smashed the BNP contender on the head.

The injured were taken to the local upazila health complex.

In Rajshahi, miscreants burnt the election office of Awami League in Bagha upazila of Rajshahi. 

The incident happened on Saturday night at Bererbari village of Arani union in the upazila.

On Saturday evening, two Awami League supporters, Rabiul Islam and Alimuddin, clashed over a chair seat. However, party fellows settled the matter. 

Later at night, miscreants burnt the office.

Bagha police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohsin Ali said no one complained about this matter.
