The Awami League has claimed that activists and members from its party and ally members are coming under targeted attacks across Bangladesh, mainly from opposition activists.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Political Adviser HT Imam said this on Wednesday after a meeting at the Election Commission.
Imam said: “We are getting news of political violence from different parts of the country and we have a list of these incidents. Most of these attacks were carried out against Awami League members.”
He informed the commission about the incidents and requested them to instruct law enforcement agencies to take necessary action.
Imam further said: “Already two of our activists were killed and such attacks are not acceptable at all.”
The former bureaucrat also said the attack on the BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's motorcade in Thakurgaon was done by their own men.
“He (Fakhrul) went there, but did not notify the local police. The attack is a reflection of the nomination business being done at the BNP's Naya Paltan and Gulshan offices,” Imam claimed.
“Their own members have fought with each other, no one from Awami League was there,” he added.
Imam alleged: “The attacks against our men were mostly carried out by BNP men in many areas including Noakhali, Faridpur, Patuakhali, Mymensingh, Bogra, Chuadanga, Manikganj, Meherpur, Sirajganj and Narsingdi.
“We have urged the Election Commission to instruct law enforcement agencies to take necessary action so that these incidents are not repeated.”
He urged the media to cross check any information before reporting, to keep the electoral atmosphere peaceful and mentioned that the role of the Election Commission is still neutral.
