Miscreants ambush BNP candidate’s campaign; 10 injured

Allegations of miscreants ambushing an electoral campaign of a BNP candidate on Tuesday, while shouting “Joy Bangla” at Saturia upazila’s Kalu Shah Mazar area. The ambush resulted in 8-10 BNP supporters getting injured.

Local BNP sources said that Afroza Khan Rita, BNP’s candidate for Manikganj 3 constituency, was heading to the Kalu Shah Mazar to offer her prayers, when members of local Awami League, led by the local Jubo League convener Rezaul Karim, blocked her motorcade.

After a heated argument, Rita forced her way into the mazar. Soon after stepping outside, her entourage was attacked without warning by 50-60 AL supporters, injuring 8-10 BNP activists in the process.

Afroza tried to file a complaint at the Saturia Police Station and hold a press conference nearby to protest the attack, but her workers’ attempts were thwarted again, with several vehicles vandalized in process.

She filed a formal complaint to the district returning officer and demanded security for future campaigning.

Officer-in-charge of the Saturia Police Station Aminul Islam refuted any acts of ambush taking place, but conceded there may have been a hostile situation in the area.
