10 injured as followers of 2 election candidates clash in Chittagong

At least 10 people were injured when followers of two candidates in Chittagong locked in a clash on Tuesday.  

The incident took place on Monday night, at Nanupur Bazar in the district’s Fatikhchhari upazila, which falls in Chittagong 2 constituency.

Locals who witnessed the clash unfold said the followers of Awami League’s rebel candidate ATP Peyarul Islam, and Syed Nojibul Bashar Maizbhandari of Bangladesh Tarikat Federation, one of the partners in the Awami League-led 14-party alliance, got involved in the clash.

They opened fired at each other, and 10 people were injured by shotgun pellets, the witnesses said.

The injured were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) and Fatikchhari Upazila Health Complex.

Fatikchhari police station OC Babul Akhter confirmed that the clash had taken place, but the situation is now under control.

Clashes among followers of rival candidates have taken place around the country since election campaigns officially began on Monday evening.

The Election Commission allocated electoral symbols among the candidates on Monday.

The 11th parliamentary election is scheduled to take place on December 30.
