Nazmul Huda: I will be the king of Gulshan

Nazmul Huda is certain of winning the polls.

Huda, a former BNP leader, will be contesting the upcoming general elections as an independent candidate from Dhaka 17 constituency after the Election Commission allocated him the "lion" symbol.

The constituency includes Gulshan, Banani, Dhaka Cantonment and a part of Bhashantek.

"My symbol is the lion," Nazmul Huda told reporters after receiving his symbol. "As you know, lions are kings of the jungle. And I will be the king of Gulshan; no one will be able to defeat me."

Huda said even though he had sought the "boat" symbol, he could not get it as he was late in informing the ruling Awami League of his desire to represent the party.

Thus, Huda, who leads both Trinamool BNP and Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF), will now contest the polls as an independent candidate.

"Several important people are contesting from Dhaka 17," he said. "Candidates from the Awami League and Jatiya Party have been nominated for this seat."

"I will try to win so I can fulfil the citizens' demands and needs with all my heart and soul," he added.

On December 2, Huda's candidature was rejected by Dhaka Divisional Commissioner and Returning Officer KM Ali Azam as he had not specified whether he wanted to represent a party or run independently on his nomination form.

Later, his appeal against the decision was accepted in a hearing led by Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on December 8.

The EC started allocating symbols for all 300 constituencies on Monday.

According to the electoral code of conduct, candidates can only start campaigning once their symbols have been allocated.

This year, candidates will get 19 days to campaign. They will have to stop their campaign activities 32 hours before voting begins on December 30.
