Minister Shajahan Khan’s wealth increases by 93%

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan’s wealth has increased by 93% in the last 10 years. His wife’s wealth has also increased by 12% during the time.

Even a decade back the influential leader and his wife did not have any houses or lands in their names in Dhaka city. But now the duo has houses and plots in Lalmatia, Badda, Meradia and Purbachal areas.

The information was obtained from Shajahan’s affidavits submitted during the 9th, 10th and 11th general elections.

According to the much-talked-about minister’s affidavit submitted this year, Shajahan’s value of fixed assets has increased by Tk3.94 crore and his wife’s by Tk2.87 crore. They both share fixed assets worth Tk2.75 crore. Altogether the minister has Tk6.69 worth of fixed assets in his name.

In this election’s affidavit, Shajahan’s mentioned politics and business as his profession, which he did in the 2005 and 2014 elections.

The affidavit showed that the main sources of his income are from his business and remuneration from being a minister and a member of parliament.

He earns TK 3.36 crore a year from his business and for being an MP and a minister, he gets Tk24.68 lakh per year.

In 2008, he mentioned having Tk7.17 lakh as cash and his wife’s was Tk23.57 lakh. At the time his current assets were worth Tk59 lakh and his wife’s was Tk26.88 lakh and in the 11th general polls affidavit it was Tk3.48 crore. This shows that his current assets have increased five times in the last 10 years.

In that year’s affidavit, Shajahan’s mentioned having loans of Tk45.3 lakh taken from people and institutions. But no loans were mentioned in the 11th general election affidavit.
