Heavyweight candidates of both major parties for the Sylhet 1 constituency have been conducting tactical campaigns for the upcoming 11th general election.
In addition to keeping in the good graces of fellow party leaders, Awami League’s Dr AK Abdul Momen and BNP’s Enam Ahmed Chowdhury are also attending events of religious significance.
Dr AK Abdul Momen
The former ambassador and permanent representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations attended three Awami League meetings and a namaz-e-janaza on Saturday afternoon, according to his assistant and fellow party leader Javed Siraj.
Following the submission of Momen’s nomination form on November 28, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith ran strategic campaigns for him. Staying in Sylhet until Friday evening, Muhith spoke to leaders of all levels of the party, telling them of the importance of the constituency and the need for party members to remain united in order to win it.
He also reminded them of the numerous development projects undertaken by the government over the last 10 years.
Enam Ahmed Chowdhury
Like his Awami League competitor, Sylhet 1 BNP candidate Enam Ahmed Chowdhury also spent his Saturday attending various events.
According to Sylhet district unit BNP organizing secretary Emran Ahmed Chowdhury, Enam offered special prayers at the grave of former finance minister M Saifur Rahmanand paid a visit to the mother of missing BNP leader M Ilias Ali.
He also checked up on imprisoned BNP leaders and activists, visited the offices of many local media outlets, and even had a meeting with Finance Minister Muhith.
Enam said it is unfair that BNP leaders and activists are not being able to stay at home while their Awami League counterpartsare campaigning for the upcoming elections.
He mentioned that a level playing field hadyet to be created for the upcoming election, and that it was the government’s responsibility to ensure this.
Meanwhile, BNP’s other nominee Khandaker Abdul Muktadirhas also met with party leaders and activists personally.
A total of 11 candidates of various parties, including Dr AK Abdul Momen and Enam Ahmed Chowdhury,are in contention for the Sylhet 1 constituency.
The 11th general election is scheduled to take place on December 30.
