EC denies BNP’s allegations

BNP has alleged on Saturday the "partisan" and "controversial" officials of the police and civil administration are hatching plots to propel ruling party the Awami League to power again.

"Police and civil administration officials are regularly holding secret meetings to ensure victory of the Awami League candidates in the upcoming 11th general polls," BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said.

In response to the accusation that he was present at the secret meeting with the secretary of prime minister, secretary of Public Administration Water Resources secretary, secretary of Civil aviation, Dhaka Divisional commissioner, Assistant Private Secretary-1 (APS) of the prime minister, RAB, DMP and Counter-Terrorism officials at the conference room of 4th floor in Officers Club on 20 November on Tuesday the EC secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said: “I strongly condemn this statement. It is totally false. I warned them to be careful about spreading such false propaganda.”

When asked if the EC will take action against BNP, he said: “ I am at this office till 8:0/9:00pm. You know this because you too are here (speaking to journalists). The issue will be discussed at the commission meeting tomorrow. The commission will take action according to the decision arrived at the meeting tomorrow (today).”

Rizvi accused the establishment of having a secret meeting on Tuesday at the officer’s club that the EC denied.

He made the allegations at a press conference held at BNP's central office at Naya Paltan in Dhaka on Saturday, reports UNB.

Rizvi claimed that police and administration officials held a secret meeting at the conference room of the Officer's Club, for two and a half hours, on Tuesday. “In the meeting, they went over the ruling party's plan to engineer the upcoming election.”

Helal Uddin went on to say: “The EC secretary is an official of the republic. The EC is an independent body. The BNP is doing this to humiliate the EC and to make the election a controversial matter.”
