EC secretary: Naya Paltan clash a criminal offence

Regarding Wednesday’s violence unleashed in front of BNP headquarters in Naya Paltan, the Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said the Election Commission thinks it is a criminal offence.

Helal Uddin made the remark while speaking to reporters after an Election Commission meeting at its headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka on Monday.

Referring to the incident that left around 50 persons injured, in a clash between BNP activists, supporters and the police, he said: "The Election Commission thinks there is no reason to stop the investigation, but has asked the Inspector General of Police to continue so that no innocent person is unnecessarily harassed in this regard".

He said the IGP on Sunday submitted the detailed report, including audio, video and still pictures of the unexpected incident that had occurred at Naya Paltan, in response tothe Election Commission’s directive.

The report was reviewed extensively at the commission meeting, said the secretary.

He said the commission also asked all parties concerned to be careful so that such incidents are not repeated.

The Election Commission seeks cooperation from all political parties and voters to maintainan election-friendly atmosphere, he added.
