There is uncertainty about Tahsina Rushdir Luna, wife of BNP leader M Ilias Ali, contesting the upcoming polls in the Biwsanath and Osmani Nagar upazila of Sylhet-2 constituency,.
According to a source, Tahsina retired six months ago from her post of Deputy Registrar at Dhaka University.
Sylhet Regional Election Officer Md Israel Hossain said, "Under the existing law, a government official cannot participate in the election if it has not been three years since his/her retirement.
Amid this confusion, her elder son, Barrister Abrar Ilyas Ornob, has submitted his nomination papers as well.
Abrar, along with his mother and other BNP leaders and activists, submitted his nomination papers on Thursday at the party's central office in Dhaka's Naya Paltan.
Earlier, Tahsina was the only BNP aspirant in this constituency and she has been active in the field, especially after the disappearance of her husband Ilias.
Meanwhile, various discussions have surfaced associated with Tahsina and Abrar's nomination submissions, adding a new dimension to the politics of Sylhet-2 constituency.
A source close to the Ilias Ali family said that due to concerns regarding complications that might arise in the upcoming elections, Abrar was brought into the country four days ago. Soon, Ilias Ali's brother Askir Ali will also return to the country.
According to the source, if for any reason, Tahsina is unable to contest the polls, Abrar will be competing on her behalf. And if Abrar faces similar complications, then his uncle Askir Ali will take his place.
Regarding the matter, Tahsina told the press that this was a strategic move on their part, to ensure that at least one family member gets the opportunity to compete in the upcoming elections.
"There is a concern that my nomination might be cancelled. We cannot fully trust the present election commission. I believe, if a fair election is conducted, then all BNP candidates will win with a huge number of votes," she commented.
Biswanath upazila BNP Joint Secretary Bashir Ahmed said that if for any reason Tahsina's nomination is rejected, then her son will be their next best choice. They will try their level best to see that at least one Ilias family member is victorious in the upcoming election.
Besides Tahsina, other candidates also competing are: Awami League District Unit General Secretary Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, and Awami League UK wing Joint General Secretary, Anwaruzzaman Chawdhury, Jatiya Party leader M Yahya Chowdhury, and Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis leader, M Muntasir Ali.
