EC instructs returning officers to stop candidates from controlling polling stations

The Election Commission has instructed returning officers to take necessary action so that candidates for the upcoming general election cannot establish control over polling centres.

The commission has also instructed that no polling centres be set up near the houses of candidates

The instructions were issued through a notification signed EC Joint Secretary Farhad Ahmed Khan.

The notification also said the commission will publish the list of polling centres through a gazette 25 days before voting begins, after the polling centres were finalized.

Returning officers have also been asked to send updates on the set up of the polling centres to the Election Commission by November 23.

The commission must be informed if any polling centre is being set up under the control of a candidate, the notification added.

It further said that returning officers must visit all polling centres after the last date for withdrawal of nominations passes, to ensure that candidates who have withdrawn cannot control the centres. The returning officers or assistant returning officers have to send reports on the outcomes of the visits to the commission.

The Election commission also instructed that postal ballots be provided to expatriate voters and officials on election duty, for convenience of voting.

Those who require postal ballots have to apply within 15 days of the announcement of the election schedule.
